New tenancy law for Lagosians underway, says Lagos government

The Lagos government has announced plans to introduce a new tenancy bill at the House of Assembly to address arbitrary rent hikes, agency fees, charges, and other exploitative and fraudulent practices imposed on tenants by landlords and estate agents.

This was announced in a statement on Tuesday, after the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, organised by the housing ministry, headed by its commissioner, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly is working on a new tenancy bill that will address all concerned issues and relieve tenants and home owners of their concerns. Currently, the tenancy bill is at the committee stage at the House of Assembly.”

According to the state government, the proposed bill, if enacted, will make it a punishable offence for estate agents to operate in the state without registering with the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority.

The government stated that the Surulere satellite office was launched to serve as an additional service point to support regulatory service operations, improve public engagement, and ensure efficiency in the real estate sector.

The agency also disclosed that it “embarked on an awareness campaign to the five divisions across the State to sensitise the public on LASRERA Activities and the need for the public to patronise registered and certified Estate Agents in the state,” adding that six billboards were erected at strategic places within IBILE with an additional one in Surulere.

The statement also noted that on March 18, 2026, the LASRERA, in collaboration with task force officers, carried out an enforcement operation against fraudulent and unregistered real estate practitioners operating in Ikorodu, and sealed the office of an “imposter”, Demeny Ventures, in Owutu, for allegedly parading himself as a registered LASRERA agent operating without obtaining the current LASRERA Permit.
