Aisha Yesufu Drops Out Of FCT Senatorial Race After NDC Reportedly Picks Pam Without Primaries
Human rights activist and politician, Aisha Yesufu, has pulled out of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial race under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following the party’s decision not to conduct primaries for the seat.
Yesufu had declared interest in the FCT senatorial seat on the platform of the NDC for the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu, known for her activism and outspoken criticism of successive governments, had recently intensified political consultations and grassroots mobilisation across the six area councils of the FCT in pursuit of her senatorial ambition.
But in a statement, she shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Yesufu informed her supporters that the party has resolved not to hold primaries for the FCT Senate position, while proceeding with House of Representatives primaries.
She wrote, “Dear supporters, our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja.
“It however intends to conduct primaries for the House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!”
Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and focus on what she described as the bigger picture which is the presidential election.
“Nigeria will be OK!” she stated. “I appreciate all your support, dedication and commitment towards #AishaForSenate project.
“In the coming week I will be returning back to all the 6 Area Councils God willing to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a better FCT.”
The development comes amid rumours that the party, in a consensus, settled for another candidate, Amanda Pam, for the FCT senatorial ticket, although the NDC has not officially confirmed or debunked the rumours.
Meanwhile, a viral video circulating online showed members of the NDC who reportedly went to the Abuja residence of the party leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, by 2 am, demanding to know whether the NDC leadership had “anointed candidates” for the FCT Senate and House of Representatives seats.
Dickson urged the protesting party members to proceed to the primary election venue, stressing that the party has no anointed candidates for the House of Representatives.
But regarding the Senate, he simply remarked, “That Senate, don’t go there,” before dismissing them to head to the venue for the primaries.(SaharaReporters)
