Probe Of Personnel Involved In Uniosun Assault Ongoing – Army

The Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo on Thursday said it had commenced an investigation into the alleged misconduct of some of its personnel accused of assaulting students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN).

This is contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the depot, Col. Yahaya Ibrahim.

Ibrahim said the personnel involved had been apprehended and were undergoing disciplinary procedures in line with the military justice system.

He called on individuals, including victims and the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to provide useful information and evidence to assist the investigation.

The spokesman added that the depot was prepared to compensate victims, noting that any personnel found culpable would face the full weight of military law.

He stressed that the actions of the accused personnel did not reflect the training and values instilled at the depot, adding that such conduct would not be condoned.

Ibrahim reaffirmed the depot’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of discipline and professionalism among its personnel.

“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth who are the future of the nation. Anything that falls short of that mandate will not be tolerated,” he said.

He added that no student or law-abiding citizen should be subjected to intimidation, harassment or assault under any circumstances.

According to him, the Army has supported neighbouring communities through regular security patrols, particularly around the university, contributing to a reduction in crime.

He also noted that the depot had undertaken community support initiatives, including free medical outreach and the distribution of fertilisers to local farmers.

Ibrahim said the depot had trained nearly 8,000 soldiers in less than 12 months, most of whom had demonstrated professionalism and discipline.

“It would be unfair to judge the entire institution by the actions of a few individuals,” he added.

The  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some recruits of the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, were alleged to have invaded UNIOSUN students’ hostels on Sunday, where they harassed, intimidated and sexually assaulted some students.

The incident triggered a protest by students on Monday, during which roads leading to the university were blocked before the school management and the Army depot appealed for calm and announced an investigation.(NAN)
