Two soldiers were reportedly killed and three others injured after troops came under a terrorist ambush while responding to a security threat in the Isa LGA of Sokoto state.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the incident occurred at about 10pm on Tuesday, June 30, when troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 division, deployed at the forward operating base (FOB) in Tidibale, responded to reports of a terrorist attack in Tagirke village.

Citing security sources, the publication said the troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat from the village.

It added that while withdrawing from the area, the soldiers ran into a well-planned ambush by the fleeing terrorists.

According to Makama, one of the military gun trucks struck an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in casualties among the troops.

Makama said two soldiers were killed in action, while three sustained injuries.

The publication noted that the bodies of the slain soldiers were evacuated to the mortuary of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, while the injured personnel were taken to the 8 Division Medical Services and Hospital for treatment.

Makama said the damaged gun truck was later recovered and towed back to the FOB in Tidibale as troops intensified efforts to track down the attackers, recover missing weapons and sustain offensive operations across the area.
