Spain Dump Portugal As Ronaldo’s World Cup Dream Ends
Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in a tense World Cup Round of 16 clash in Arlington, Texas, on Monday, with Mikel Merino’s stoppage-time strike settling a cagey Iberian derby and sending La Roja into the quarter-finals and with it ending Christiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dreams.
The match, billed as one of the glamour ties of the knockout stage, failed for long periods to produce the fireworks expected from two of Europe’s biggest football nations. But just when extra time looked inevitable, Spain struck the decisive blow.
The breakthrough came in the 91st minute after Rodri was fouled and Spain reacted quicker than Portugal from the resulting free-kick. Ferran Torres slipped the ball through to Merino, who kept his composure and finished clinically to break Portuguese hearts.
Portugal had gone into the match with Roberto Martinez making one change to his starting line-up, bringing in Joao Felix for Rafael Leao. Felix started alongside Pedro Neto and captain Cristiano Ronaldo, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente kept faith with the same side that defeated Austria, with Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal leading the attacking threat.
Spain controlled more of the ball but initially struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Oyarzabal had one of the better early openings but failed to punish Portugal, while Ronaldo showed flashes of movement and ambition without finding the decisive touch.
Portugal’s best moment came when a header struck the crossbar, a warning that Spain were still living dangerously despite their control. But as the match wore on, both sides became cautious, aware that one mistake could end their tournament.
That mistake eventually came from Portugal’s lack of alertness at the death. Spain’s quick thinking from the set-piece caught Martinez’s men flat, and Merino’s goal proved enough to settle the contest.
The defeat is especially painful for Portugal because it may have marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance at a World Cup. The veteran forward had earlier indicated that this tournament would be his last, and Spain’s late winner left him and Portugal stunned.
Spain now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the United States versus Belgium.
