Couple, Three Children Killed as Overhead Water Tank Collapses on Home in Enugu

Tragedy has struck Nenwenta community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, after an overhead water tank collapsed onto a residential building, killing six members of the same family.

The victims were reportedly a couple, their three children and a grandmother. A four-year-old child survived the incident and is receiving medical treatment. 

The incident reportedly occurred on September 18, 2026, amid heavy rains and landslides in the area.

The tragedy was brought before the Enugu State House of Assembly by Anthony Nwankwo, representing Awgu South State Constituency. He called for urgent government intervention, particularly the reopening of roads leading to Nenwenta and nearby Ugwueme, which had reportedly been cut off and hampered emergency response. 

Nwankwo appealed to the Enugu State Ministry of Works, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and the Ecological Fund to intervene urgently.

Lawmakers expressed condolences to the affected community and also raised concerns about hazardous construction practices, including construction on hillsides and soil excavation, amid the heavy rains and landslides. 

The incident comes days after another building collapse in Enugu State, in which an uncompleted four-storey hotel reportedly collapsed, killing one person and injuring four workers. 

Six family members have therefore been confirmed dead in the latest tragedy, while one child survived.
