Respond to any threat without geographical limits – Iran’s supreme leader tells military
Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has instructed the country’s military to respond to immediately to any threats, without geographical restrictions.
In a statement on Saturday, Khamenei also ordered an expansion of the list of potential American and Israeli targets.
The warnings came as Qatari and Pakistani mediators intensified efforts over the past 24 hours to broker an agreement between Tehran and Washington.
Countries in the region have been anticipating that US President Donald Trump, who has largely refrained from launching strikes against Iran, could resume attacks after the American mid-term elections.
However, Iran has repeatedly said it would respond to any new attacks by striking at US and Israeli targets in neighbouring countries.
“Any level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response,” Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since replacing his father, killed at the war’s outset, said in Saturday’s statement.
He said senior commanders had reported a high state of readiness along the Gulf coast, in and around the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, as well as along Iran’s northwestern and southeastern borders.
Abdolrahim Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, echoed the warning shortly afterward, saying the military was preparing a new list of targets covering a wide geographic area.
He and warned that Tehran’s response to any attack would be “unimaginable” to its adversaries.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had yet to decide whether to launch new strikes against Iran but would prefer to resolve the conflict diplomatically. (TheCable)
