Six Adamawa Assembly members resign from PDP
The political climate in Adamawa State has taken a dramatic turn following the resignation of six members of the State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a move widely seen as a prelude to major realignments ahead of unfolding political developments.
The Assembly formally received and acknowledged the resignation letters during plenary, signalling what observers describe as one of the most significant shifts in the legislature’s recent history.
Among those who stepped down from the PDP is the Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Buba Jidjiwa, representing Jada/Mbulo Constituency. Others include Kefas Kalvin (Toungo Constituency), Bulus Geoffrey (Leko/Koma Constituency), Haruna Jilantikiri (Madagali Constituency), Kefas Emmanuel (Song Constituency), and Ahmed Jingi Belel (Maiha Constituency).
Leadership Structure May Shift
The resignation of the Deputy Speaker has sparked intense speculation about possible changes in the leadership hierarchy of the House.
Political watchers say the development could trigger a reshuffling of principal officers, depending on lawmakers’ next political destinations and how party numbers shift within the chamber.
Although the lawmakers have not publicly disclosed detailed reasons for their departure, credible sources within the Assembly point to broader strategic recalculations currently shaping the state’s political terrain.
Analysts note that if the six lawmakers align with another platform, it could significantly alter legislative voting patterns, influence the passage of key motions and bills, and redefine power blocs within the Assembly.
As of press time, the PDP leadership in Adamawa had yet to issue an official statement addressing the resignations.
Amid the unfolding drama, the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, has urged stakeholders in Hong local government council to align with the political direction of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to secure what he described as “more dividends of democracy.”
The call was made during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Hong, convened ahead of the widely speculated defection of Governor Fintiri and PDP supporters across the state to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The gathering drew key political figures, including the Member representing Gombi/Hong Federal Constituency, James Barka; the Member representing Uba/Gaya in the State Assembly, John Alaba; and the Executive Chairman of Hong Local Government, Usman Inuwa Wa’aganda. Party executives and stakeholders from all twelve wards of the local government were also in attendance.
Sources at the meeting disclosed that discussions centred on forging a unified political front and preparing the grassroots structure for possible cross-party alignment.
With six lawmakers already exiting the PDP and growing signals of a potential gubernatorial defection, Adamawa’s political landscape appears poised for a significant transformation.
Political analysts say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the developments represent isolated resignations or the beginning of a broader political migration that could redefine party dominance in the state.
For now, stakeholders, party faithful, and residents alike remain on alert as the unfolding scenario continues to reshape the balance of power in Adamawa.
