Rivers council workers suspend strike after Fubara’s intervention

Following the intervention of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, the local council workers in the state who commenced strike yesterday over a rift with Emohua Local Council Chairman, Chidi Llyod, have suspended the industrial action.
Fubara, after a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the Local Government Service Commission, and the Chairman of Emohua Local Council Area, Lloyd, directed that the parties resolve their differences amicably.
In a joint press briefing after the meeting with Fubara in the Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, the Chairman of Local Government Service Commission, Israel Woke Amadi, the Chairman of Emohua Local Council Area, Llyod, and President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Rivers State Council, Clifford Paul, commended Fubara for his intervention and assured that they will comply with his directive to ensure that the disputes are harmoniously resolved. Amadi said: “The governor has given his mandate, and we want to use this opportunity to thank him for intervening.
“And we hope that everything that we have discussed and resolved will be implemented, as we also thank NULGE for its collaboration and cooperation.”
Also speaking, Llyod noted that Fubara has issued clear directives and assured that they will work together to implement them. He emphasised that the governor had further directed that the council and the Local Government Service Commission should take it further, noting: “We will come out very soon with all that we have agreed.”
Announcing the suspension of the industrial action, Paul noted that, having met with the governor to discuss their disagreement with Emohua Local Council, which had resulted in a statewide strike action in the councils, they have resolved, as directed by the governor, that the matter be handled harmoniously.
