UNILAG ASUU shelves strike, opts for dialogue
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, has suspended its strike, opting for dialogue with the university’s management.
The union had on Tuesday night directed its members to withdraw their services indefinitely after accusing the university of paying incomplete salaries and withholding components of their earnings, including Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
However, following the intervention of the national leadership of the union, the aggrieved workers agreed to suspend the action and meet with the management to iron out their grievances.
In a statement signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-UNILAG, Prof. Idowu Kehinde, the branch said the national leadership of the union acknowledged its efforts to compel the university to pay the full salaries.
It said the resolutions adopted by the branch congress had been forwarded to the national body of the union.
According to the statement, several efforts are now underway in response to the branch’s demands, with university officials, who previously declined to engage with the union, now reaching out.
However, the President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Pinuwa, had intervened and advised the branch to suspend the industrial action.
The decision also followed the intervention of the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and plans for an emergency meeting between the union leadership and the university’s administration scheduled for today (Thursday).
Following the directive from the national leadership, the branch asked its members to resume their normal duties while discussions continue.
“Members are enjoined to respectfully defer to our union’s national leadership and continue with their normal activities, while this matter is being resolved,” the union stated.
