It’s Not Yet Time To Remove Red Cap – Kano Governor Tells Supporters
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reassured his supporters that he will continue wearing the iconic Kwankwasiyya red cap, despite defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There has been growing speculations in the state over the governor’s refusal to drop the cap, which is a renowned symbol of Kwankwansiya movement.
However, when he was seen with a dark blue camo carrying Tinubu’s insignia in Yola, Adamawa state, some of his supporters asked if they could dump the red cap.
But the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said no order has been given yet to drop the cap as “it is not yet time to do so“.
In a post on his Facebook handle on Tuesday, Dawakin Tofa said, “There has been no directive to remove the red cap yet. This was a special outing in Yola, Adamawa State, where dignitaries dressed in uniform. Let’s be patient; everything has its time.”
The clarification comes as debates intensify over Yusuf’s continued use of the red cap, a symbol long associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement led by his former boss, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Although Yusuf has distanced himself from Kwankwasiyya’s inner circle, he has retained the red cap as part of his political identity. Analysts note that the cap has evolved beyond factional politics, becoming a broader cultural emblem in Kano.
Daily Trust reports that lately, many Kwankwasiyya followers and even some of the governor’s supporters have been asking the governor to remove the cap just as his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, did when he parted ways with Kwankwaso in 2018.
