Plateau Crisis: Residents Who Saved Christians, Muslims Rewarded With N1m
Residents of Anguwan Rogo and Anguwan Rukuba communities in Jos who protected both Christians and Muslims during recent violence have been rewarded with N1 million, with N500,000 each for the two communities.
On Sunday last week, some residents of Anguwan Rukuba reportedly saved several Muslims caught in the violence after gunmen attacked the community.
The victims were later handed over to security agencies and community leaders after the tension died down.
Two days later, following the relaxation of a curfew, fresh crisis erupted in some parts of Jos North, affecting some Christians in Anguwan Rogo.
They were, however, shielded by residents and safely handed over to security personnel.
Impressed by their show of humanity and kindnes, a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Gwani Muhammad Adam Alkali, rewarded the good Samaritans with cash, commending their commitment to peaceful coexistence and urging others to emulate them.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, community representatives said they shielded the people out of sheer humanity and appreciated the gesture.
Blessed Geoffrey from Anguwan Rukuba said, “What we did was simply put humanity first—protecting our neighbors regardless of their faith. They are human beings like us, and if we have the chance to protect them, we can do it. His concern strengthens our belief that peace is not only possible but necessary.”
Muhammad Sulaiman from Anguwan Rogo said, “What happened showed that humanity is above religion, and we are proud of what both communities achieved together. A human being is a human being irrespective of their religion. We appreciate Gwani for strengthening the bond between us and our Christian neighbors. We did not act for recognition, but for the sake of Allah.”
At least 28 persons were killed when gunmen attacked Anguwan Rukuba, shooting indiscriminately before fleeing.(Daily trust)
