Terrorists Invade Kwara Community, Kill Five Forest Guards, Including Commander, Burn Security Vehicles
A group of terrorists suspected members of Boko Haram have carried out a deadly midnight attack on Nuku community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing at least five forest guards and destroying security vehicles, SaharaReporters has learnt.
The early morning assault, which occurred on Friday, has thrown residents into panic and deepened concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area.
SaharaReporters also obtained videos and photographs confirming the attack, including scenes of burnt motorcycles and destroyed patrol vehicles belonging to security operatives.
Sources told SaharaReporters that the attackers struck at about 3:00 a.m., targeting operatives of the recently established forest guard outfit introduced under the administration of President Bola Tinubu to tackle rising insecurity.
A resident, who spoke to SaharaReporters, confirmed the incident, describing it as sudden and devastating.
“There were fatalities. No fewer than five forest guards lost their lives. Their motorcycles were completely burnt, and even security patrol vehicles were set ablaze,” he said.
He explained that the gunmen stormed the community under the cover of darkness, catching the operatives unprepared.
“The attack happened around 3 a.m. when residents were still asleep. The Boko Haram militants operated for a while without any challenge. By the time help eventually arrived, they had already wreaked havoc,” he added.
Local sources disclosed that the commander of the forest guard unit in Nuku was among those killed, a development residents said has severely weakened local security efforts.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisals, said the incident has left the community gripped by fear.
“We are living in constant fear. The attackers moved around freely with weapons and no one could stop them. If security personnel can be killed this way, then ordinary people are completely exposed,” the source said.
The latest attack comes amid rising tension in the area following the circulation of disturbing videos showing abducted residents pleading for help from captivity, which had already triggered anxiety across communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.
Residents said the killings have further worsened the already fragile security situation, calling for urgent intervention from both the Kwara State Government and federal authorities.
“We need urgent reinforcement here. The situation is getting out of control. The government must step in quickly before it escalates further,” another source told SaharaReporters.
During the attack, several operational assets were destroyed, including at least five motorcycles belonging to the forest guards, while patrol vehicles reportedly used by mobile police officers were also set ablaze by the attackers.(SaharaReporters)
