Nigerian Immigration Suspends Lagos-Seme Border Commanders Over Extortion Allegations

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has been thrown into fresh controversy following allegations of widespread extortion by its personnel along the Lagos-Seme border corridor.

In response to the allegations, the NIS in a press statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed that its Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged misconduct.

Akinlabi described the actions captured in the said viral reports as a serious breach of professional standards.

“The Comptroller-General of Immigration unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports as such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service,” the statement read.

Akinlabi further stated that the Immigration boss has temporarily relieved the Comptrollers overseeing the affected commands at the Lagos-Seme border corridor, of their duties.

According to Akinlabi, the ongoing probe is expected to identify all officers involved in the alleged extortion scheme, with assurances that “appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect.”

The agency urged for public calm, reiterating its commitment to professionalism and transparency at Nigeria’s borders, insisting it would not tolerate actions capable of eroding public trust.

“The Service wishes to reassure the general public that it remains committed to delivering professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit. It will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service,” the statement added.

Amid growing concerns over systemic abuse by security personnel across Nigeria’s borders, the NIS also called on citizens to report misconduct through its official communication channels, noting that internal accountability mechanisms are being strengthened.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration,” Akinlabi stated.

The development comes as public frustration mounts over repeated allegations of harassment and extortion by officials operating along the busy Lagos-Seme border, a key gateway between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.(SaharaReporters)
