‘It Takes Two’ rapper Rob Base dies at 59 after cancer battle
Rob Base, the American rapper better known for hip hop classic ‘It Takes Two’, has passed away at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer.
A statement released on his Instagram page revealed that Rob passed away “peacefully” while he was “surrounded by family”.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement reads.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives. Rest in Paradise, Rob Base.”
A Harlem native, Base rose to fame alongside DJ E-Z Rock as one-half of the hip-hop duo behind the 1988 hit ‘It Takes Two’.
The track peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart and later earned platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Over the years, the song has been sampled by artistes including Snoop Dogg and the Black Eyed Peas, while also appearing in films such as the 2009 romantic comedy ‘The Proposal’ starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.
It was also featured in the 2004 release of the popular video game series Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. (TheCable)
