World Cup: Mexico Qualify For Knockout, Canada Hit Qatar 6-0, Switzerland Thrash Bosnia
Mexico became the first team to advance into the knockout stage with a 1-0 win over South Korea at the Guadalajara stadium. Luis Romo scored the only goal of the night to send El Tri through in front of 45,000 fans.
The winning goal came in the 50th minute when South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with team-mate Lee Gi-hyuk, allowing mifielder Romo tap into an empty net for his first World Cup goal on his first ever start.
Co-hosts Mexico will finish Group A as group winners, winning a World Cup group for the first time.
Canada, also co-host, thrashed Qatar 6-0 for their first ever World Cup win thanks to a Jonathan David hattrick for the biggest win by a CONCACAF nation in World Cup history.
Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba were also on the scoresheet, with a Qatar own goal completing the scoresheet in a match the Arab nation finished with nine men. Homam El Amin was dismissed in the 33rd minute for a professional foul, and Assim Omer Madibo’s horror tackle that led to Ismael Kone’s broken leg was upgraded to a red card by VAR.
Switzerland also won big with a 4-1 win over ten-man Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Swizz were inspired by substitute Johan Manzambi who scored twice as all five goals came in the last 20 minutes of the match.
The 20-year-old midfielder scored the first goal of the match on 74 minutes to become the youngest player to score a double as a substitute in a men’s World Cup match.
