Northern governors convene in Kaduna to address insecurity, power outages
Governors from the 19 northern states are currently meeting in Kaduna in response to escalating insecurity and persistent power outages affecting the region.
The meeting featured key discussions with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and military leaders, including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Speaking at the meeting, the chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, reiterated the critical need for a strategic overhaul in the fight against insecurity and called for the integration of both kinetic (military) and non-kinetic (community engagement) approaches to address the root causes of violence and criminality.
The governors are also pressing for enhanced collaboration with federal security forces and exploring innovative methods to ensure the safety of citizens.
Yahaya noted, “The essence of the meeting is to review strategies for tackling insecurity and to explore alternative options that have not been previously considered.”
In addition to security concerns, the governors discussed the ongoing power supply issues that have plagued the region for eight days.
Already, northerners on X are trending the hashtag #EnoughisEnough to call the attention of the government over the electricity situation.
Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria has commenced repair work on the vandalised Shiroro-Kaduna line that led to the reduction of bulk electricity to Kaduna, Kano, and other major cities in the northern part of the country.
The spokesperson of the TCN, Ndidi Mba, affirmed that the bulk power supply would be restored as quickly as possible despite prevailing security challenges.
