Ex-Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi loses 89-year-old mother

The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has lost his mother, Mary Amaechi, aged 89.

Mr Amaechi’s media team, in a statement on Thursday, said the family matriarch died peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of the beloved mother of Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Late Mrs Mary Amaechi, who departed peacefully on Thursday, 16th July, 2026. She was 89,” it said.

The statement described Mrs Amaechi as a cherished matriarch who held her family together in love, peace and unity.

It added that she was a community women’s leader and a Christian leader whose faith in God was firm and resolute.

“She was loved and highly respected in her community, and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for those around her and beyond,” it added.

The family of the former Rivers State governor thanked sympathisers for the outpouring of condolences and support during the difficult period.

It said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course, while expressing appreciation for the continued thoughts and prayers of friends, supporters and well-wishers.
