divorce law court

A 26-year-old woman, Alamu Fatima, yesterday told a customary court sitting at the Agege Local Government Council that though she bore the rent for the apartment where she was residing with her husband, he has been maltreating her.

Fatima is, therefore, pleading with the court to dissolve her three-year-old marriage to her husband, Oyewale Alamu, for not according her due respect, among other allegations.

The petitioner, of No. 8, Ijebutedo Street, Lagos, stated in her petition to the court that Alamu had been beating her and had not been taking care of the child in the marriage. She also alleged he had been disrespecting her family and also delighted in comparing her with his friend’s wife.

“I paid for the house rent and some other things yet my husband still beat me with a belt and embarrassed me like a kid. I want this marriage dissolved,” she said.

The 34-year-old husband, an insurance agent residing at No 24, Orepodun Street, Orile Agege, Lagos, explained to the court that he and his wife had been having disagreements and he actually beat her once but regretted every bit of it.

“Since then I have never laid my hand on her. My wife is always the cause of every misunderstanding as she wouldn’t listen to what I tell her. On August 15 this year, my wife took my son and left the house with her load. I called her on phone but she refused to pick my calls.

I haven’t seen my son since then. We didn’t really have any serious nargument. I still want my wife,” he said.

Alamu pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage.

The court president, Mrs Patricia Adeyanju, adjourned the case till November 29, 2018 for a possible alternative dispute resolution.
