No Election Delay Unless Ebola Spreads Widely, NCDC Says

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said there is currently no need to postpone Nigeria’s 2027 general elections over the Ebola outbreak, warning that a delay may only be considered if the disease spreads widely enough to threaten public health.

NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, made the clarification during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, October 26, amid concerns about the possible impact of the outbreak on the electoral timetable.

Idris expressed hope that the elections would proceed as scheduled, stressing that the current situation did not justify any postponement.

“We hope not, because if the thing gets wide enough, there might be concern. As of now, there is no need for that,” he said.

The NCDC chief explained that health authorities had been monitoring the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and had anticipated the possibility of the virus reaching Nigeria through international travel and population movement.

He also rejected suggestions that the outbreak could be used as a political weapon ahead of the elections, insisting that public health issues should not be exploited for political purposes.

The comments come as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Nigeria confirmed an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus on October 20, 2026. Although the index patient was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland for treatment, the NCDC has warned that contact tracing and surveillance must continue before the country can be declared free of the outbreak.

Idris also clarified that the decision to postpone an election was beyond his authority, noting that any consideration of a delay would depend on the severity of the outbreak and its implications for public safety.

For now, the NCDC maintains that the elections should proceed as scheduled, with any change dependent on developments in the public health situation.
