President Tinubu Should Call FCT Minister Wike To Order – Civic Organisation

President Bola Tinubu has again been asked to rein in on his minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike, and call him to order over his perceived recklessness with lands in the nation’s capital.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) condemned what it described as “reckless and uncivil behaviour” by public officials including Wike, warning that such conduct damages Nigeria’s image and erodes confidence in the nation’s governance system.

Meanwhile, another advocacy group, the #Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, which stated this on Wednesday, also strongly condemned the verbal attack on a naval officer by Wike.

The group’s convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatile in a statement on Wednesday described the incident, which occurred during an inspection visit to a construction site in the Gaduwa District of Abuja, as “uncalled for, and a direct affront to the honour and integrity of Nigeria’s military institution.”

Fatile said it was unacceptable for any public official, no matter their position, to publicly humiliate any member of the Armed  Forces.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate video circulating on social media showing the Minister of the FCT engaging in a heated altercation with a naval officer. This act sends a dangerous signal that political authority can trample on institutional discipline and national honour,”

Ambassador Fatile stated.

She urged President Bola Tinubu to call the Minister to order and demand a public apology to the Nigerian Armed Forces.

According to her, the officer’s composure and professional restraint during the confrontation demonstrated the core values of discipline and respect in the military.

Ambassador Fatile reiterated that the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies deserve support from all Nigerians, particularly political leaders, given their sacrifices in defending the nation against insecurity and other threats.

She further called on civil society organisations, religious leaders, and citizens to rise in solidarity with the military, warning that any attempt to demoralise the nation’s defenders could weaken Nigeria’s collective security architecture.

CISLAC in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani) — who also heads Transparency International (TI) Nigeria — had said that public office demands restraint, humility, and discipline, not arrogance or abuse of power.

“Public officials are supposed to be civil and civilised in carrying out their responsibilities and must understand the code of conduct that guides public office,” Rafsanjani had said.

“The idea of public officials attacking security personnel is unacceptable and passes a wrong message about the nation. They must be role models, not symbols of impunity.”

CISLAC was reacting to the recent public altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a military officer, which it described as “gross indiscipline and recklessness unbecoming of a public officer.”

According to the group, Wike’s conduct reflects “a consistent pattern of arrogance and lack of emotional control,” dating back to his years as Rivers State governor.  (SaharaReporters)
