“Nigeria will not fail, we always bounce back” – Ex-Army Chief Buratai speaks on insecurity
Former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, says persistent claims that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse are misguided and ignore the country’s history of resilience and capacity to overcome crises.
In a statement titled “Nigeria: An Unbreakable Nation Rising Through Challenges,” Buratai said projections such as the 2011 CSAT assessment underestimate both leadership reforms and the determination of Nigerians.
He argued that Nigeria has survived political turbulence, economic shocks, and security threats that could have destabilised many nations.
“From independence to date, our leaders—civilian and military—have steered this country out of storms many nations would not survive. Nigeria cannot and will not fail,” Buratai said.
The former army chief credited past leaders, from Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello to Yakubu Gowon and Murtala Mohammed, for steering Nigeria through defining moments, adding that today’s leadership is more accountable and connected to citizens.
Buratai said while economic hardship persists, judging Nigeria only by present challenges is “shortsighted”. He noted that the country remains Africa’s largest economy, with growing influence in telecommunications, fintech, entertainment, and human capital.
On insecurity, he described current challenges as a “renewal phase,” insisting that Boko Haram has been significantly degraded compared to its peak years.
He cited ongoing investments, such as railway modernisation, major roadworks, airport upgrades, and the Dangote refinery, as proof that Nigeria is building for the future.
Buratai also criticised Western institutions for “doomsday projections”, urging global partners to prioritise investment, technology transfer, and fairer trade systems.
To Nigerian leaders, he recommended deeper economic diversification, decentralised security, and stronger civic patriotism. He also urged African countries to push harder for integration under AfCFTA and for a fairer global financial order.
“Nigeria’s destiny lies in the hands of Nigerians—a people blessed with abundant resources and an unbreakable spirit. We will not fail. We are rising,” he said.
