The chairman of the Lagos State branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, says Nigeria should embrace rotational presidency as convention.

He spoke in Lagos Monday while receiving members of the Association of Religion Reporters who paid him a courtesy visit.

Adegbite said the arrangement would save the polity of undue political pressures that tended to heat up the system at elections.

The Methodist bishop enjoined political actors to emulate CAN’s leadership arrangement, where zoning had fostered peace.

“If zoning is upheld by the political elite and by extension the political parties, the unhealthy rivalries that pitch one ethnic or political zone against the other will fizzle out.

“We should find a way to de-emphasise the tension associated with electioneering.

“We should focus more on things that bond us through good governance to stabilise the economy and cater to the nation’s teeming unemployed youth,’’ he said.

Adegbite expressed regret that responsive leadership had eluded the country for too long and had given rise to avoidable social deformity such as kidnapping, banditry and unemployment.

He, however, encouraged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country.

Adegbite enjoined Nigerians to continue to pray for the country and her leaders for divine direction. (NAN)
