Southwest Development Commission Secures Rail Licence To Connect Six States
The Southwest Development Commission has secured a provisional Rail Operating and Track Licence from the Nigerian Railway Corporation to develop a regional rail network across the South-West.
The commission said the project is designed to revive previously unserved and dormant rail corridors, while establishing a modern transportation system linking key economic hubs in the region.
Under the plan, the rail network will connect all six South-West states — Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, Osun State, Ondo State and Ekiti State — through an ambitious 44-city rail grid.
Officials noted that the initiative is expected to significantly boost regional integration, ease the movement of goods and passengers, and stimulate industrial growth across the South-West corridor.
The project is also projected to contribute to increased productivity and economic expansion, with a focus on enhancing supply chains and unlocking new investment opportunities within the region.
The provisional licence marks a critical first step towards the realisation of the rail network, with further regulatory approvals and infrastructure development phases expected to follow.
