Lagos estate leadership denies fraud allegations
The leadership of Happyland Estate in the Eti-Osa axis of Lagos State has dismissed allegations of financial misappropriation, describing the claims as misleading and inconsistent with the estate’s current record of growth and transparency.
The reaction follows recent accusations that some executives of the Happyland Estate Landlords’ and Residents’ Association were involved in the alleged diversion of over N28.5m and were shielded by senior police authorities, including Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Margaret Ochalla.
Reacting, the estate leadership said the allegations did not reflect the financial realities within the estate, insisting that its accounts and projects were open to scrutiny and had shown significant improvement under the current leadership.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman of the estate, Hyacinth Eze, insisted that the leadership of the estate had maintained financial discipline and achieved infrastructural development since assuming office in January 2025.
According to him, the estate’s finances grew from about N10m at the start of their tenure to nearly N40m as of April 2026, a development he said contradicts claims of fund diversion.
Eze also dismissed allegations of intimidation or suppression of dissenting voices, maintaining that the estate operates a democratic governance system where leaders are elected for renewable two-year terms and are accountable to residents.
He argued that the improvements recorded in infrastructure, welfare, and security demonstrate prudent use of funds and a commitment to transparency, including the introduction of monthly financial reports and biannual audits.
“The estate’s finances have recorded a significant boost, growing by over 300 per cent — from N10m at the commencement of our tenure in January 2025 to approximately N40m as of April 2026.
“The transformation within the estate is visible and impactful. Roads have been rehabilitated, additional drainage systems constructed, and a new pedestrian gate installed.
“The main entrance has undergone repairs, while the canal bordering the estate has been mechanically dredged to improve environmental conditions,” he said.
While acknowledging that a faction of residents has continued to raise concerns, he warned that prolonged disputes could undermine the estate’s progress and lead to unnecessary legal and administrative costs.
Eze called for unity among residents, urging stakeholders to focus on sustaining development and preserving the estate’s reputation as a growing residential hub in Lagos.
He maintained that it remained open to independent verification of its accounts and operations, reiterating that no funds have been misappropriated under the current administration.
The Financial Secretary, Temitope Akinwande, dismissed the allegation of fraud, stating that the figure being circulated was drawn from unaudited records covering a previous period between November 2024 and August 2025.
He explained that a residents-backed audit committee had since reviewed the accounts and found no evidence of missing funds.
“The claims are based on incomplete and unaudited figures. A proper audit was conducted, and it did not establish any misappropriation,” he said.
The Legal Adviser of the estate, Chinweikpe Iwuchukwu, also dismissed the allegations, warning that those making unverified claims risked legal consequences.
According to him, those making such assertions must be prepared to substantiate them before a competent court or face the consequences.
“If the court finds that there was no misappropriation, then the individual who made the false claim would be liable under the law. Issues of defamation, cyberstalking and bullying would arise,” he added.
He maintained that payments made from the estate account were for legitimate purposes, noting that an audit committee had already confirmed that no funds were missing.(Punch)
