The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the state has uncovered 119 persons with symptoms of COVID-19 in a search of 118,000 households in the state.

He disclosed this during a briefing on Tuesday.

According to him, Lagos government decided to hit communities in a bid to halt the spread of COVID-19 in the state, which the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says has the highest number of confirmed cases in the country.

Abayomi said the active case search in communities would continue.

โ€œWeโ€™ve embarked on an active case search in communities. The idea is to go to hot spots and go from door to door with our health personnel. So far, in the last two days, weโ€™ve visited 118,000 households and weโ€™re looking for the typical symptoms of COVID-19. Weโ€™ve identified about 119 people who have the symptoms that are suggestive of COVID-19.

โ€œBut let me remind you that COVID-19 is one of the viruses that can cause respiratory symptoms. There are many viruses. So, the idea is to take samples from these 119 and analyse them and that would give us an idea of how much COVID-19 activity is happening in the communities,โ€ the commissioner said.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari recently extended the 14-day lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and FCT by another 14 days to curb the spread of the virus in the country.
