N5,000 for fuel: IGP orders disciplinary action against 6 officers for extortion

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has ordered disciplinary action against six officers for extorting money from motorists along the Benin By-pass.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the police said the IGP condemned the unprofessional conduct of the officers who demanded funds for fuel from motorists.

Recall that Politics Nigeria had reported that some officers were captured in a viral video urging motorists to part with N5,000 as fuel money before they could leave the police checkpoint.

The police officers who are yet-to-be-named accused the motorists of not possessing the e-CMR document as authorised by the IGP.

However, the statement said the erring officers including their supervising officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police appeared before the IGP at the Force Headquarters.

The IGP was said to have described the actions of the officers as shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.

“Accordingly, the officers have been queried, while orderly room trials for the Inspectors implicated in the video have commenced,” the statement said.

It further reiterated the committment of the Nigeria Police Force to unholding professionalism.

The police also stated it will not tolerate any form of misconduct as sanctions will be meted out in line with the provision of the Force’s disciplinary procedures.
