“It’s All About 2027” – Gumi Reacts to Trump’s Watch-List Decision
Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria as politically motivated, describing the recent developments as part of a wider scheme ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Gumi reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians.
Trump’s action followed pressure from some foreign groups urging Washington to place Nigeria on a religious freedom watch-list, despite denials from the Nigerian government that any form of genocide against Christians exists.
Gumi accused certain “unpatriotic bigot clerics” of fueling the narrative for political gain, insisting that the United States had no business meddling in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
According to him, “Nigeria is under the evil eye of religious bigotry. We are not only dealing with criminals from banditry, Boko Haram, IPOB, and others—as Governor Soludo recently admitted—but also with local clerics aiding imperialists to divide us and exploit our resources.”
He continued, “At a time when Americans are queuing for food, why are they concerned about our internal issues? Efforts are being made to address insecurity; what’s missing is the right mix of strategies. Now, they want to complicate matters. All this noise is simply about 2027.”
Gumi further alleged that some non-governmental organizations and foreign actors were responsible for arming militias under the guise of humanitarian aid, warning that such interference could destabilize the country further.
