BREAKING: Tinubu Postpones G20, AU-EU Trips Over Kebbi, Kwara Attacks; Orders Massive Security Deployment
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled foreign trips to South Africa and Angola to receive additional security briefings following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the deadly attack on Christian worshippers in Eruku, Kwara State.
The President, who was due to depart Abuja on Tuesday for Johannesburg to attend the 20th G20 Summit, with a continuation to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit, suspended the journey after what the Presidency described as “disturbing security breaches” in the two northern states.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu has directed the military and police authorities to immediately deploy more personnel to Eruku community and the surrounding Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. The directive followed a request from the governor of the state.
The President also ordered security agencies to launch a full-scale manhunt for the bandits who attacked members of the Christ Apostolic Church during a worship session on Monday.
In Kebbi State, where 24 schoolgirls were kidnapped, President Tinubu insisted that rescuing the students “must remain an urgent national priority.” He reiterated his instruction to security agencies to “do everything possible” to bring the girls home safely.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on the President’s behalf to condole with the affected families and community leaders, is expected to brief the President on his findings. Tinubu is also awaiting detailed reports from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services on the Kwara attack.
The President assured Nigerians that his administration is fully mobilised to confront the latest wave of banditry and kidnapping, stressing that the safety of citizens remains at the core of his national security agenda.
