The director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, reportedly says about 4.6 million Nigerians have so far participated in the scheme.

The Nation reports that Ibrahim said this at an ongoing media parley with editors and reporters covering the organisation in Abuja.

The DG said the scheme, since its inception, has continued to contribute to national development.

The scheme was established in May 1973 by former head of state, Gen Yakubu Gowon (retd).

Meanwhile, the NYSC DG has earlier promised to inform corps members about the date for the commencement of the payment of N30,000 new allowance to them.

He said this at a workshop on freedom of information act for desk officers of the NYSC in Abuja.

“They will be communicated accordingly, please,” he said when he was asked the particular date for the commencement of the payment to the corps members.

According to him, the workshop was aimed at consolidating on the successes recorded by the scheme in the area of freedom of information and its law.

The NYSC boss said the scheme had faced some challenges occasioned by what he called “apparent lack of knowledge of our policies and operations by a section of the public.”

Ibrahim advised Nigerians to try and understand the NYSC so as to get used to issues with the operations of the scheme and its role.

“Since the enactment of the freedom of information act in 2011, the NYSC has been in the forefront of ensuring total compliance with the provisions of the act,” he said.
