Jeremiah Ojediran, the vice-chancellor of the Bells University of Technology, Ota in Ogun, has commended the National Universities Commission (NUC) over the closure of universities ahead of the February 25 and March 11 elections.

Mr Ojediran made the commendation in Ota, Ogun.

Deputy executive secretary of NUC, Chris Maiyaki, had on February 3, directed all vice-chancellors of universities to close their institutions from February 22 to March 14 for the elections.

“The decision of the NUC was highly commendable as the institution would have sufficient time to plan for the academic semester while the students would also have the opportunity to exercise their civic right,” the Bells vice-chancellor said.

Mr Ojediran described the closure of the nation’s universities as a wise decision.

He explained that before NUC’s directive, Bells had arranged for its 100-level to 300-level students to return home on Friday after their first semester examinations.

“The institution had forecast ahead as it is good and better for students to be with their parents to exercise their votes. In addition, some of these students would be going to villages to exercise their civil rights,” he said.

The Bells vice-chancellor said the university would organise online lectures during the break.
