A former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, has been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre after fulfilling his bail conditions.

Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, confirmed the release.

Duza said, “Agunloye has been released from the prison after meeting his bail condition. He was released this evening around 5:30pm.”

The release follows the order from a Federal High Court in Abuja, which had previously remanded Agunloye in Kuje Custodial Centre over a $6 billion Mambilla hydropower contract.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged Agunloye, who served as a minister from 1999 to 2003, under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

During the court proceedings, Agunloye pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the Mambilla hydropower project initiated in 2003. The EFCC alleged that he awarded the $6 billion contract to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited without proper budgetary provision, approval, or cash backing.
