Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has said what infamous former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida did to Nigerians in June 1993 has been reenacted by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

According to Adebanjo during an interview on Arise TV, the battle for democracy continues until the voter’s votes count and electorates enjoy the fruit of their votes.

“June 12 was principally for voters to show that their votes will count as the son of Abiola said that was the first time in this country that people voted irrespective of religion or ethnicity; mind you, I don’t know if anybody or how many people will remember that Afenifere (NADECO then), Abiola is not our fan, he doesn’t belong to our party.

“But because he won the election free and fair, we supported him but what Babangida did for us at that time is what Mahmood has done for us at this time. That is why I said we have not learnt a lesson; you allow votes to count, let the voters’ votes count and that’s why we are seeing this trouble. That’s why I said; the battle continues until you allow votes to count and electorates to enjoy the fruits of their votes.”

Former military President Ibrahim Babangida had annulled the June 12 election which triggered massive protests across the country as several people opposed the annulment of the freest, fairest and most peaceful election won by the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

Adebanjo also said for peace and tranquility to reign in Nigeria, the country should be restructured back to federalism.
