Rainstorm that accompanied a two-hour rainfall Friday evening destroyed 105 buildings in Oke-Ako, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

It also destroyed electricity facilities across the town, thereby throwing the people into blackout.

Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji, during on-the-spot assessment of the town yesterday, condoled with the residents.

Oyebanji, represented by his deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, described the occurrence as highly devastating.

Afuye was conducted round the affected areas by the regent of the town, Ogunbiyi Tinuade Adebayo; the lawmaker representing Ikole Constituency 2, Adeoye Aribasoye; and the chairman, Ajoni Local Council Development Area, Michael Ogungbemi.

“Let me also assure you that the state government won’t abandon you and allow you to regret in these current devastating conditions. We shall give all the necessary support to mitigate whatever effect this situation must have caused to your lives,” the deputy governor said.

Aribasoye assured the people that succour would soon come for the victims, urging them to be peaceful and have fate in the government to help recover their losses.

The General Manager, Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Jide Borode, said the rainstorm effect could have been minimised, if the landlords had keyed into the tree planting initiative of the state government.
