Six Togolese nationals and a doctor who recently returned from Kano are among the latest persons to test positive for COVID-19 in Oyo state.

The doctor is a staff member of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, made the announcement late Friday when he gave updates on the COVID-19 situation in the state.

According to him, an officer of the state security service (SSS) and two residents in Ogbomoso also tested positive for the coronavirus.

The announcement came days after Makinde expressed concerns about the shortage of reagents for processing samples.

“Due to a shortage of reagents required to process COVID-19 tests, we currently have a number of pending results. Of the 775 samples collected so far, 300 are awaiting results,” he had tweeted on April 29.

However, it appears the issue had been resolved as the state announced that it had started receiving results of tests that were initially pending.

“We have started receiving results of pending COVID-19 confirmation tests. Two tests came back positive late last night. One from a UCH doctor who returned from Kano and another is a worker with the State Security Service,” he wrote.

“Another eight tests came back positive today. Of the eight newly confirmed cases, six are Togolese nationals and the remaining two are Oyo State residents in Ogbomoso.

“In addition to the case recorded in Lagos which was announced yesterday, another confirmed case recorded in Kano is also being managed in Oyo State. This brings the number of active cases in Oyo State to twenty.”

Oyo recorded its index COVID-19 case on March 22 while the first fatality was confirmed exactly one month later on April 22. (The Cable)
