A 17-year-old who was released from prison two days ago has been arrested again by men of the Lagos state police command.

The boy was rearrested after he broke into someone’s house to steal.

Posting videos of the suspect on Twitter, the spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, wrote

”This 17-year-old was released from prison two days ago after doing two years for cultism. Yesterday, he broke into someone’s house to cart away valuables. What exactly are we getting wrong? NB: His lips…he had scuffles with neighbors who apprehended him, not the Police.”

However, the report did not sit well with Nigerians.

Commenting on the report, Nigerians called for the reform of Nigerian prisons. Many also argued that a 15-year-old boy should have not been re-orientated and not jailed with criminals.

@Dumbshroom wrote: “This means he was taken to Kirikiri at the age of 15? The system has added to the boy’s troubles in life. He would only be more hardened in prison and we can see the result instantly already.”

@Iammadeolu4 said: “Shame on KiriKiri that’s meant to be a correctional facility, obviously no plans to reintegrate convicted criminals, just spending, poor living for the inmates and no effective reintegration plans into the community, just serve time, and be released back into the community.”

@bamz_eben said: “This young man is purely a recidivist. His term at Kirikiri didn’t contain rehabilitation and reintegration. I will keep saying that our criminal justice system needs serious overhauling. We need to onboard the right behavior professionals and psychology so as to lessen the surge.”

Responding to some of the criticisms, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said:

“Obviously, you are not aware there is another prison in Kirikiri apart from the maximum-security prison.”
